National Register of Historic Places for Newark, New Jersey

 

Newark, New Jersey was founded by the movement of Pastor Abraham Pierson, one of the dissenters from the Colony of New Haven. The settlement was also aided by Robert Treat and Jasper Crane in 1661 because they spoke with Governor Peter Stuyvesant. However, it was actually the Duke of York who granted the deeds of lease and release to Lord John Berkeley, Baron of Stutton and Sir George Carteret thereby, New Jersey was born.

 

Newark, New Jersey was once inhabited by the Hackensack Indians. This tribe sold Newark to the settlers in 1667. Famous Newarkers include Allen Ginsberb, Maria DeCastro Blake, Savion Glover and Queen Latifah. Some of Newarks parks are designed by Frederick Law Olmstead. In addition, Newark’s sculptures are designed by Gutzon Borglum.

 

Newark’s history is firmly grounded in Puritan origins. Only one bold soul went agains the Newark church-state; this man was Colonel Joshiah Ogden, who harvested his wheat on Sunday. As the leather industry grew Newark experienced the rise of the Industrial Revolution. Today, Newark celebrates Veteran’s Day at Military Park. Newarkers also enjoy the Cherry Blossom Festival and the Irish Festival.
